Vegetables, the dreaded food that not many are a fan of. I'm sure that we have all heard about the wonders and benefits of eating vegetables but sometimes, it's easier said than done. If you are the type of person that hates seeing leafy greens on your plate then a green smoothie is a super easy way of incorporating vegetables into your diet, with the added bonus of vitamins and minerals from fruit.
Why eat it, when you can drink it?
What is a Green Smoothie?
A Green Smoothie is a drink, jam packed with vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables.
And the Taste...?
No, don't worry! It tastes nothing as bad as eating a salad. In fact, you can barely taste the vegetables at all.
I have made so many variations of a green smoothie, some creative and some not so smart combinations, but every single time, cup of baby spinach is a MUST. Baby spinach is literally a super food and gives the smoothie a smooth, velvety texture!
Benefits of Baby Spinach!
- Super low in calories, so it's great for weight loss
- It's loaded with antioxidants, vitamin A, C, E, K, Calcium, Iron... and the list goes on
- Spinach has flavonoids that prevent Cholesterol build up and offers protection against free radicals in the body
What do I need?
The ingredients in this smoothie are all kitchen staples.
2 Tablespoons of Yoghurt. I'm currently loving Ski's Activ Digestion yoghurt because it's super smooth and creamy with low fat and prebiotics! Here I used vanilla flavoured yoghurt, but you can use which ever flavour your like.
1 Cup of Orange or Apple Juice. If you don't have orange juice use orange slices instead but add a little bit of water or it could become very thick. Over the weekend I squeezed a whole box of oranges and stored it in 1L bottles, it's all natural and very sweet.
1 Cup of Salad Mix with Spinach. I started off with only spinach but nowadays, I tend to use this Baby Leaves with Beetroot salad mix that I picked up from Woolies. I like this because it has a great combination of greens and also thinly sliced carrot and beetroot, that adds an extra dimension to the smoothie.
1 Cup of Ice. You can omit ice if you don't like your smoothies thick but I am crazy for thick, super cold smoothies.
How to make?
Chuck all above ingredients into a blender and blend on high for 1 minute.
The End Result...
A
nutritious smoothie that is so simple and fantastic that I drink at least 3 times a week. This is a
superb breakfast idea that takes under 5 minutes to make.
Also, if you have
frozen fruits in your fridge, throw them in as well but remember to go easy on the ice!
